About this Photograph:

Candy Pirates captures a moment of visual joy and layered storytelling in the heart of Amsterdam. Taken through the reflective glass of a candy shop window, this single-shot photograph blends vibrant barrels of colourful candy with the weathered elegance of the historic buildings outside. The playful candy hues pull the viewer in, while the surrounding architecture and passersby remind us of the rich, textured life happening all around—often unnoticed.

Like many of the photos in this series, this photograph explores perception—what’s real, what’s reflected, and what’s imagined. The image reveals the layered interplay between interior and exterior, stillness and motion, tradition and play. It draws attention to the juxtaposition of modern life—fast-moving, brightly coloured, consumer-driven—reflected against the timeless backdrop of Amsterdam’s traditional Dutch architecture.

Having lived in the the Netherlands in my 20’s, and with Dutch heritage woven into my life, there was something beautifully full-circle about standing in that place—seeing my own roots, my family, reflected in the buildings, the textures, and the spirit of the street. This image became more than just a visual composition for me—it became a mirror for memory, ancestry, and connection.
